Grades 7-12: Careers in Visual Arts

This videoconference will focus on painting and murals. Do you think you have what it takes for a career in art? An art professional in a competitive environment has to be 'a cut above' the rest, and will need to develop real, marketable skills. Creative visual art careers can be challenging and rewarding.

Take a look at all the options available at various fine art or a graphic art degrees/diplomas and choose the one that’ll give you the most options -- you may think you know what you’re going to enjoy, but may end up being surprised by what you enjoy most. Take enough business courses to ensure you’ve the skills to sell yourself and your work, and can manage your own business (do the books, pay your taxes, understand a contract etc.). You need good language skills to present yourself and your work -- e.g. could you write a good press release for your first show, compose a letter to a gallery without any grammatical or spelling errors? And make sure you can touch type -- it saves a lot of time! If you can’t afford full-time college, do part-time courses rather than give up on the idea of an art career.

2010-11

WVIZ/PBSideastream®

Careers in Health Care Series

Program:

“Hospital Safety and Security”

Security is a major concern for any public institution, but hospitals and other medical centers present planners with a unique challenge. Beyond the ethical responsibility to keep patients and staff safe, the abundance of expensive medical equipment and potentially harmful drugs also puts medical facilities at a heightened risk of theft. Reports into hospital security have raised concerns that criminals regard hospitals as "supermarkets without tills".

Join us for a discussion with the chief security officer of Southwest General Hospital and a safety and security specialist as they discuss their job responsibilities, educational background, training and skills needed as they work towards creating a safe and secure hospital environment.

Presenters:

Tristan Harker Chief – Protection Services and Environment of Care, Southwest General Hospital

Faye Gemelas Safety and Security Specialist, Southwest General Hospital

Grades 7-12: Careers as a Physician's Assistant

Medical jobs in the US are one of the most rewarding and fastest growing professions, both in terms of monetary gains and job satisfaction. Physician Assistants, or PA's perform several duties similar to that of a doctor. Apart from the most challenging and complex cases, all tasks of a doctor are carried out by PA's. Some of the works that physician assistants perform include examination of patients, prescribing medications and treating minor ailments. Physician assistants must have a desire to serve patients and be self-motivated. PAs also must have a good bedside manner, emotional stability, and the ability to make decisions in stressful emergencies. Physician assistants should have an enthusiasm for lifelong learning, because their eligibility to practice depends on continuing education.

Salaries of all professions, including Physician Assistant, depend on some common factors including work experience. Income varies by specialty, practice setting, geographical job location, educational qualifications, employer type, and years of experience. Employers often pay for their employees' professional liability insurance, registration fees with the Drug Enforcement Administration, State licensing fees, and credentialing fees.

Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment of physician assistants is expected to grow by 49 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. Projected rapid job growth reflects the expansion of healthcare industries and an emphasis on cost containment, which results in increasing use of PAs by healthcare establishments. Many physicians' offices want to take on more patients without hiring additional physicians or surgeons. Job opportunities project 20,000 new jobs to be created through 2016. Opportunities are expected to be best for states in which physician assistants can prescribe medications and have a wider scope of practice, especially in rural and inner-city healthcare facilities. The field's largest employer of Physician Assistants are physician's offices. Depending on the interest area, a PA can pursue some courses in internal medicine, surgery, and health care at home. Value addition is a great way to enhance physician assistant salary. Physician assistant salary and other benefits are sure to follow with advancements in this career.

Grades 7-12: Careers in Building: General Contractor and Construction Management

General Contractors are responsible for overseeing construction projects and hiring the subcontractors needed to complete the job on time and on budget. General contractors are often responsible for entire construction projects and help to coordinate specialty contractors and workers who perform general construction duties like framing, insulation and planning. They usually work on building projects for commercial or residential use.

Presenter: Lance McDonald of Landmark Construction

Construction managers coordinate and supervise the construction process from the conceptual development stage through final construction, making sure that the project gets done on time and within budget. They often work with owners, engineers, architects, and others who are involved in the construction process. Given the designs for buildings, roads, bridges, or other projects, construction managers oversee the planning, scheduling, and implementation of the project to execute those designs.

General Contractors and Construction Managers should be flexible and work effectively in a fast-paced environment. They should be decisive and work well under pressure, particularly when faced with unexpected occurrences or delays. The ability to coordinate several major activities at once, while analyzing and resolving specific problems, is essential, as is an understanding of engineering, architectural, and other construction drawings. Good oral and written communication skills also are important, as are leadership skills. Managers must be able to establish a good working relationship with many different people.
