Thursday, March 4
STEM: Exploring Careers in Electrical Engineering “Engineering: Trying to walk a straight line when the real world is curvy”
The real world of engineering is not always a simple transition from college to the workforce. This presentation will focus on how the political climate, world events, and friendships can affect an engineer’s career. Join with a research & development engineer from Booz | Allen | Hamilton as he discusses his educational background, the path he took to get to where he is now, his real-life experiences in the engineering world.

Thursday, March 11

Students from participating middle schools and high schools will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues with this professional.

Friday, March 12
Exploring Careers in Real Estate Sales
Real estate sales have been depressed during these tough economic times. Existing homes on the market are plentiful but buyers are hesitant. Finding the right home for the right buyer is the desire of a real estate professional. Jason White, real estate advisor for residential and light commercial properties in southwest Ohio, prides himself with finding the correct fit. He states that the fit comes with more than the price. You have to find the property that “feels” like a place where you would like to live and/or raise a family. Whether he represents the buyer or the seller you have to get to know the personalities and wants and desires and match those with available properties or potential buyers. Jason realizes that buying or selling a home is probably the single largest transaction that the client has ever made and therefore must create confidence that all aspects are being handled professionally to the full extent of the law. Jason will share with students the types of classes he has taken, what students can do now to be prepared, and his thoughts about home sales in the future.

Monday, March 15
Exploring Your Career Potential
Dave Leedy spent 30 plus years as a high school teacher. During this period he collected anecdotes from students and staff as to how people become successful. He truly believes that you are not born to be successful you make your success by how you live everyday and your positive thoughts. Today, as a professional motivational public speaker, he travels around the nation. Dave delivers his message dressed as a “super hero” – that’s right, a 60+ year-old man in tights and a cape. He wants to convey that you too can be a super hero if you treat yourself and others with respect and dignity. Students can reach their highest potential and success in a career but not without giving something to others. We all must stand up for ourselves and be a super hero in our actions toward others. It doesn’t matter what our career choices are, it matters how we get there and who we helped along the way – everybody needs somebody. Join Dave as he shares his thoughts and shows students how what they do today definitely affects their career potential.

She enjoys expanding her creations to include sets of dishes, ornaments, and even mixing glass with her creations. Nancy’s visual arts hobby has evolved into a career. After graduation, Shawn plans to continue her studies in graduate school and study directing. Her ultimate goal is to own a theater company. Dr. Mary Lou Zwiesler has treated a couple of generations of patients and looks forward to the challenges of each new day. Sometime the treatment is not physical but consoling a patient after sharing bad news with a family member. No two days are alike in family medicine and that is the challenge for Dr. Zwiesler. She actually started medical school later in life after her two children were well along in school. Dr. Zwiesler shares a unique insight as to never giving up on your dreams even if you start pursuing them later than normal. She will also give her perceptions on the many support people (nurses, bookkeepers, receptionists, and etc.) who help to run a successful practice.

Gr 7-12 Fluorescent products to help make the world a “brighter” place

In the 1930's, Bob and Joe Switzer experimented with ways of combining fluorescent dyes and resins that produced colors far brighter than normal and that had the unique effect of "glowing" under ultraviolet or black light. Where a clean, bright conventional color is able to reflect a maximum of 90% of a color present in the spectrum; a fluorescent color can reflect as much as 200% to 300%.

Initially, these new colors and effects found their way into magic shows, stage shows, and movie promotion posters. As the chemistry and manufacturing process improved, the areas of application expanded. Advertising, safety and promotional firms began to recognize the uniqueness of these bright colors and Day-Glo grew.

Today’s Day-Glo

Day-Glo Color Corporation is the world’s largest manufacturer of daylight fluorescent pigments, offset printing inks and bases, screen inks, paints and allied fluorescent products. Day-Glo also produces and distributes non-fluorescent conventional pigment dispersions, as well as fluorescent and non-fluorescent dyes, tracers and phosphorescent pigments.

Day-Glo and the Career Awareness Program

Please join us on February 11th, 2010 for an interactive presentation. Day-Glo professionals from the Research and Sales divisions will be on hand to introduce you to the world of fluorescent color, share their academic and business experiences, and answer your questions.

Grades 7-12: Careers in Landscaping and Property Management

Dave Pier’s landscaping career began while he was still in high school. He dug the holes, planted the bushes and trees, spread the mulch and had brief moments to review his hard work before moving on to the next job. As Dave worked for a small nursery he realized the work was hard and dirty but there was a certain inner-satisfaction from his efforts. Today, Dave is the president/owner of Clean Cut Landscaping and Lawn. Even though his year-round duties include landscaping, cutting lawns, and snow removal, his greatest satisfaction comes with solving site problems – bushes or trees won’t grow in this location; there is a bad run-off on this side of the house; or clients just want to change “the look” of their landscaping. Dave and his “Clean Cut” employees know what it takes to please their customers and encourage repeat business and referrals. Dave will be able to talk with the students about all aspects of the business from creating the design, quoting a fair price for a job, doing the work on time and making a small profit. To this day, Dave still digs holes with his employees but he carries the responsibility of the entire project on his shoulders.

Grades 7-12: Careers in Custom Home Building

Less than five years ago the new home market was at an all-time high. The recent recession pushed new home building to depths that no one thought possible. To survive this dire situation as a new homebuilder, you have to cut costs and do many things yourself. Chad Ellis, president of Ellis Custom Homes, is a survivor. To continue in the business he had to know all aspects of home building which includes, promotion – getting the potential clients into model homes to show the quality of workmanship; negotiating a fair price; hiring capable workers (including carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and etc); and managing the sub-contractors to reach the desired quality and do it on time. Customer satisfaction is critical to referrals and continued business. Chad will be able to explain to students who seek careers in construction just what he looks for in a potential employee and answer questions as to what students can do now to prepare for this type of work in the future.
