Grades 7-12: Careers in Landscaping and Property Management

Dave Pier’s landscaping career began while he was still in high school. He dug the holes, planted the bushes and trees, spread the mulch and had brief moments to review his hard work before moving on to the next job. As Dave worked for a small nursery he realized the work was hard and dirty but there was a certain inner-satisfaction from his efforts. Today, Dave is the president/owner of Clean Cut Landscaping and Lawn. Even though his year-round duties include landscaping, cutting lawns, and snow removal, his greatest satisfaction comes with solving site problems – bushes or trees won’t grow in this location; there is a bad run-off on this side of the house; or clients just want to change “the look” of their landscaping. Dave and his “Clean Cut” employees know what it takes to please their customers and encourage repeat business and referrals. Dave will be able to talk with the students about all aspects of the business from creating the design, quoting a fair price for a job, doing the work on time and making a small profit. To this day, Dave still digs holes with his employees but he carries the responsibility of the entire project on his shoulders.
