Grades 7-12: Careers in Custom Home Building

Less than five years ago the new home market was at an all-time high. The recent recession pushed new home building to depths that no one thought possible. To survive this dire situation as a new homebuilder, you have to cut costs and do many things yourself. Chad Ellis, president of Ellis Custom Homes, is a survivor. To continue in the business he had to know all aspects of home building which includes, promotion – getting the potential clients into model homes to show the quality of workmanship; negotiating a fair price; hiring capable workers (including carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and etc); and managing the sub-contractors to reach the desired quality and do it on time. Customer satisfaction is critical to referrals and continued business. Chad will be able to explain to students who seek careers in construction just what he looks for in a potential employee and answer questions as to what students can do now to prepare for this type of work in the future.
